EduOps
The Education, Operations, and Workforce Development (EduOps) Initiative is a collaborative project between Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, and Hinds Community College and is lead by Jackson State University’s Mr. Edward R. Collins. The University of California – Davis and the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense (FAZD), a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Excellence, support the EduOps program’s pilot initiative of educating current and future DHS workforce personnel on the Mathematics and Science of Avian Influenza (H5N1). The EduOps initiative was envisioned as a three-front system of channeling relevant research from DHS Centers of Excellence to the future DHS workforce (K-12 students), the near-future DHS workforce (college students), and the current DHS workforce (first-responders). We’ve already held the Mathematics and Homeland Security Academy, led by Ms. Edna Holbrook of Jackson State University, geared towards educating K-12 teachers, exampling Avian Influenza and mathematical survey/control. Additionally, the Mississippi Avian Flu School Workshop, coordinated by Jackson State’s Dr. Raphael Isokpehi, was recently held to educate the near-future DHS workforce in relevant Center of Excellence research. Finally, relevant and practicable Avian Flu research findings are being incorporated into ALLHAZ, supporting the current workforce of first-responders, emergency managers, and decision makers. The North American Plan for Avian and Pandemic Influenza outlined the Nation’s key objectives of detection, containment, and control of an Avian Influenza outbreak. The EduOps initiative works toward ensuring these objectives are met, now and in the future, through an educated workforce.
